Traffic inbound to Cairns from the north can enjoy a scenic route along the coast via Port Douglas. Keep a good lookout for helicopter, microlight and hang-glider traffic operating around Port Douglas, along with for other fixed-wing scenic flights along the coast. Helicopters are usually operating at about 500ft.

Listen to the ATIS on 131.1 or VOR 113.0 and call Cairns Approach on 126.1 for clearance no later than 10nm prior to the class C boundary if you want to remain above 1000ft.
Note: there is no radar coverage between about Wangetti and Double Island, due to terrain shielding, and the VHF coverage is unreliable in this area, so ensure you have contacted ATC prior to Wangetti, preferably around Port Douglas.
Keep a good lookout for other traffic, particularly around Wangetti where hang-gliders are often operating at low level.
To remain outside class C airspace, descend to 1000ft or below.

Double Island is an easily identified feature and is marked on your VTC. Remember, at low level, ATC cannot see you until you round the corner at Buchan Point.
You must have a clearance before proceeding south of Buchan Point/Palm Cove. Report at Double Island if requested by ATC, where you may be required to orbit due to heavy jet traffic inbound on the ILS.

If there is no jet traffic about, you may be cleared for a straight-in approach to RWY 15 without joining the Western VFR Corridor.
If you are asked to join the Western VFR Corridor, it is vital to remain to the west of the highway and Smithfield Shopping Centre. This becomes a narrow corridor, with the hills immediately to your right, so it may not be a safe option in high winds.
If for any reason you are unable to maintain tracking within the corridor, advise ATC immediately.
If you are in the Western VFR Corridor at 1500ft and you need to fly lower due to low cloud, ask ATC for a clearance level of “not above 1500ft”.
When RWY 15 is in use, expect ATC to direct you onto a right base leg for RWY 15, at approximately the Barron River.
If RWY 33 is in use you will continue down the corridor and make a turn onto left base for RWY 33. Remember, do not leave the corridor i.e. do not start your turn until you are given a specific circuit joining instruction by ATC.
