VFR Route 9 is a particularly useful route for visual navigation, as staying on track will keep you well clear of the restricted area of Pine Gap.
Entry to VFR Route 9 is via the approach point of Jay Creek, a small settlement comprising a cluster of farm buildings on the western edge of the creek.

From Jay Creek, the route follows a track of 057, just north of the line of the western MacDonnell Ranges. Remain to the north of the sealed Larapinta Drive and pay particular attention to the proximity of Pine Gap.
At 12NM from Alice Springs, you will track overhead the check point of Simpsons Gap.

Simpsons Gap is located at the junction of VFR Routes 9 and 10 and is a busy area for helicopter scenic flights.
Turn right onto a track of 124 direct to the aerodrome. You will pass a few miles to the south-west of the town of Alice Springs.
