Departures to the west are most likely to be via Stoney Creek, which is a low point in the hills west of Cairns. Advise when taxiing if guidance might be required so that ATC can provide timely assistance to identify this feature.
Cloud base needs to be at least 3000ft to have clear passage through. Keep in mind that there is a requirement to stay 1000ft below cloud in class C airspace.

Stoney Creek provides the lowest terrain in the ranges west of Cairns. It is still important, however, to check the weather carefully before a departure to the west. If required, you can ask ATC for an amended clearance to ‘not above ...’ giving you more flexibility to operate at the safest level below that specified altitude.
Out to your right-hand side as you approach Stoney Creek, you will be able to pick up the landmarks of the Barron Falls and the nearby town of Kuranda (centre top of photo).

The Biboohra VOR is a good reference when tracking out to the west. The VOR is located in the circular brown paddock (mid-photo) immediately west of the township.
