If you are arriving from Hermannsburg or Kings Canyon, this is a particularly useful route for visual navigation and will help to keep you clear of the restricted area of Pine Gap.
ATC recommends that, irrespective of your altitude, you contact Alice Springs Tower, 118.3, at 45-50NM with your inbound details.
Enter the route via the VFR approach point of Owen Springs.

Owen Springs is a cluster of farm buildings, a water tank and long shed located on the eastern side of the Hugh River. VFR Route 8 follows a track of 081. Be vigilant with accurate tracking along this route, to ensure you remain well clear of Pine Gap.
Restricted area R215 is the Joint Defence Space Research Facility of Pine Gap, which you can see out to your left. This is an RA3 restricted area, into which clearance is never available.
At 7NM from Alice Springs, you will track overhead the checkpoint of Gaol Water Tower. The water tower is located on the north-eastern corner of an easily identified large prison on the western side of the Stuart Highway.
