Outbound to the west, depart the zone at 1000ft and take up a track that will keep you clear of the Goodna VFR approach point. However, pilots should be vigilant not to infringe R633A, the military firing range to the south, which is almost always active up to 2000ft.
The military restricted airspace at Amberley can become active at short notice. Activity status can be obtained from Archerfield Tower or Brisbane Centre on 125.7
Departing Archerfield, you must remain on the appropriate Archerfield Tower frequency (123.6 or 118.1 depending on the runway in use) until you reach the class D boundary near the intersection of the Western Freeway and the Ipswich Motorway.
However, if you are attempting to get a clearance into Amberley in the air, it is important to ensure you request clearance early to avoid penetrating the airspace. Abeam the Western Freeway intersection, contact Amberley Delivery on 134.6 for clearance. If you have two radios, continue to monitor Archerfield Tower for information on opposite-direction traffic inbound.
Pilots must not cross the boundary of the Amberley CTR without a clearance, but remember not to orbit close to the VFR inbound approach point of Goodna, which is on a sharp bend of the Brisbane River.
Depending on outbound track, pilots are advised to track for either Lake Manchester or Spring Mountain and remain outside controlled airspace awaiting clearance.
Tracking via these points will position you away from the Amberley circuit and a clearance across the Amberley CTR is more likely. It is also a safer option due to potential conflict with inbound traffic at Goodna.
If you have been requested to remain outside Amberley airspace, do not cut the corner at Spring Mountain or Lake Manchester. Track via the northern shore of Lake Manchester, while applying the required DR tolerance (as in AIP ENR 19.12).
If heading south-west while keeping clear of Amberley restricted airspace, track east of Spring Mountain and south of Flinders Peak.
Be aware of drop zones with regular parachute activity at Toogoolawah to the north-west of Amberley, and the Ripcord drop zone near Gatton.
