Inbound from the north via the coast, Noosa Heads is a logical inbound reporting point to use if you are at a height of 1500ft or below, as there is still 5nm to run from this point before you enter the Sunshine Coast CTR.
Should you be arriving at a height above 1500ft, it is advisable to request your clearance at least 5nm prior to Noosa Heads to avoid any delay due to traffic or frequency congestion. Ensure you have listened to the ATIS on 114.2 (VOR frequency) or 119.8 (VHF Comm frequency) before contacting the Tower. Take care not to climb above 1500ft south of Noosa Heads without a clearance.
You may hear local pilots using Lake Cootharaba, Lake Cooroibah or Lake Weyba as reporting points – all easily recognisable landmarks inbound from the north.
Lake Weyba is an excellent geographical feature to help you in this area. If you are abeam the southern edge of this lake, you are about to penetrate controlled airspace.
If direct clearance is not available, perhaps due to IFR traffic arriving from the north-east over water, ATC may ask you to track to the western side of the Sunshine Motorway, a few miles to the west of the coastline.
Be aware that there are often high-density parachute operations at Stumers Creek, a little creek to the north of the township of Coolum. When parachute ops are in progress, clearance down the coast will not be available and, depending on the altitude from which they are dropping, ATC may direct you to track to the west of the Sunshine Motorway. If they are operating from flight levels, you will not be issued with a clearance to enter the zone. After you report in at Noosa Heads, ATC may ask you to track into the zone via Eumundi to aid separation.

A reporting point often used by the control tower for inbound traffic from the north is the Coolum Hi-Rise which comprises two 10 to 12-storey high-rise buildings right on the beach.

Mount Coolum is another commonly used reporting point, a little further south of the Coolum Hi-Rise, with an elevation of 680ft.
This coastal track is a very popular scenic route so watch for traffic in both directions at all times in this area.
